Conga or Peg Drum…
A Cuban-style African drum, the conga has been the most popular hand drum in the U.S.A. for the last sixty years. There are many in circulation with varying shell designs and tuning systems.
The conga is typically made with staves—strips of wood cut and shaped like orange slices to fit together to make a tall, round, wide-belly drum. Usually a conga also has metal tuning hardware
attached to the drum shell (side). The most-common repairs we do on congas are sealing longitudinal cracks in the shell (often resulting from mishandling of the drum) replacement of lost metal
hoops, and replacement of cowhide heads with hand-selected and hand-worked skins that we import directly from Africa. A well-fitted head of the right thickness can make a world of difference in
tone and playability; often players using cheaper congas come to us to make their cheaper drums right (or they buy high-quality hand-carved congas from us and get ‘em right the first time). Most
pros can feel and hear the difference! Whether your conga or peg-tuned drum in need of TLC is old or new, large, medium-sized or small, famous-label or infamously quirky and one-of-a-kind…

Motherland Music’s Repair Shop can rebuild even the most dilapidated conga or peg-tuned drum into a functioning instrument, or can tweak and fine-tune a drum that’s already in good shape in
order to bring out its best sonic and playing potential. We import our cowhides and goatskins from Latin America and Africa and carefully select the ones best-suited to your drum. Supply of antelope
skins may be limited due to customs restrictions, however we usually have suitable replacement skins for any size or type of African drum. We also build many drums upon request from your specifications.
We offer a wide variety of drum shell, rim,  tuning system & lug or rope, and drumhead options. For full details on your many options for custom-built drums and drum sets and/or to have your drums
carved and/or assembled from scratch to
your own specifications, please contact us! Some design consultation is free.

Peg-tuned Drum

1.      Replace goatskin & tune (most peg-tuned drums from Ghana or peg-tuned Sabars from Senegal): 80.00.

       harvest or international export/import restrictions.

Service (for either skin type above) includes skin removal and replacement, flesh hoop adjustment, minor edge work, and primary peg tuning (fine tuning & skin maintenance of peg-tuned drums is
usually done by the player with a rubber mallet or a small metal hammer similar to those for Indian tabla hand drums).

Other (peg-tuned) repair options:

1.      Replace tension peg: 2.00 ea. (small Ghana, e.g. kagan),  4.00 ea. (Sabar or med. Ghana, e.g. kidi or kpanlogo), or 12.00 ea. (large Ghana, e.g. sogo or fontomfrom).

Note: The above pricing is general and may not apply to your specific instrument(s).
Please visit one of Motherland Music’s repair staff for a full estimate.

We cannot quote complete pricing over the telephone, because we need to see the drum in order to give you a correct appraisal—so it’s best if you can bring it in or ship the drum to us.

a heavy flight bag or hard case and/or shipping insurance. We normally insure shipments up to $500, and of our shipments are automatically insured up to $100.00 value. We do however
recommend that you purchase or authorize us on your behalf to purchase additional insurance coverage for heirloom or other especially valuable instrument(s)
before we ship to you. If you
have any questions
about packing/coverage for your item(s), please contact us or the shipper immediately. We are not liable for damages caused in shipment (unless we pack items improperly,
and we are consistently careful to pack all items properly).

Thanks so much for your continued support and kind testimonials! We're here for you when you need us, too.

Talking Drum, Doumbek, Tombak, Tabla
We also offer repairs on talking drums with several stringing and head repair options available. Most better-quality talking drums can be repaired for less than replacement cost of the entire drum.
Due to the complexity of repairing these types of drums, we cannot publish a price list. Note: Lizard skins may be unavailable for repairs, but we generally can supply thin goatskin replacement heads
and high-quality gut or suede strings and supple hand-sewn leather replacement edgies for better-quality Nigerian talking drums. If available, we can order and install or simply sell plastic replacement
doumbek/darbouka heads. Tombak (Persian hand drum) service may require up to three weeks due to gluing process required for head repair. Note: We currently offer limited tabla or frame drum head
repair services; for these instruments, we may be able to provide some repair materials to do-it-yourselfers. Feel free to contact us for more information on any of our service offerings and limitations,
about how to pack drums for shipment to us, etc.

Custom Drum and Stand Design/Build

We offer custom drums hand-assembled in our shop from African shells, including Batá, Brékete, Conga, Djembe, Dundun, Tribal/Ceremonial and many other types with several hardware, stand,
rope-stringing or metal hardware choices and head repair options available, including choice of skins and tuning methods (rope or mechanical systems).

Feel free to contact us for more information on any of our custom design/build options for 1-10 drums and/or stands. We also welcome school and other organizations to send us your drum and
percussion requirements and budget limit and let us bid on your needs for anything percussion-related. We are a full-line African and “ethnic” percussion supplier; not only a drum shop.

Are you leaving a drum with us for repair?
Our "Customer's Repair" storage space is limited. Unless we must ship it to you after completing repairs, please take your bag with you when you drop off the drum in order to prevent accidental loss
of or damage to the bag in our busy workshop environment.
Thank you for your cooperation.
