Kofi Quarshie is a brilliant Master Drummer from Accra,
Ghana, west Africa. He began playing conga as a child in the 1970s and
at age 9 joined an adult percussion group (Twiana
Cultural Group) playing at festivals and other events around Accra.
After a stint in Rainbow Cultural Group
with Tschatscheloh, he joined forces with Akim Manso, a 25-strong troupe of musicians, singers and dancers for
his first European tour in 1991.
Upon returning to Ghana, Kofi
founded the Friends Group and then in
1993 he renamed it the Agoo Group, as it
is still called when they tour the world. Kofi is an
amazing drummer and teacher!
Quarshie studied with Mustapha Tettey Addy, one of the most famous drummers in West Africa and he took extensive training in traditional West African dance culture. Kofi has taught dance and drumming at the Center for National Culture in Accra, at the Academy of African Music and Arts, University of Legon in Accra and at various other schools.
Kofi toured throughout Africa and in
the USA from 1988 to 1994 with, among others, Mustapha Tettey's Royal Obonu Drummers. Then
Quarshie played with reggae icon Lucky Dube
(R.I.P.) and
world music star Peter Gabriel at Womad.
He was also on tour with the African
dancer, singer and drummer Lizzy Hammond,
also known as “Mama Africa.”
