EKWE DRUMS
EKWE - Two tone Ibo log drum. Available in two types of hardwood. Played with either a plain wooden stick, or a rubber-tipped beater. These wooden drums are found in the eastern part of Nigeria. The larger Ekwe are usually played with two sticks, while the smaller can be played with one stick. The Ube wood that is used in carving the yellow EKWE drum is also called "White Wood" because the yellow outer part of the drum is not its natural color. Instead the shell of the drum ids painted with a yellow powder that had been diluted in water. The red EKWE are carved out of a red wood called "Orji" in the Ibo language. This wood is more expensive than the "white" wood both because of its beautiful natural red color and due to its ability to resist damage from insects. This wood is not very common in the bush as are many other woods
